When you first glanced at the title I’ll bet it evoked a little bit of an ‘eye-roll’ response. If it did I wouldn’t blame you. Why do we shy away from truly making the time to really know ourselves. Is it we are afraid to find things we’d rather leave well alone? Or maybe that we’ll find nothing there worth much? Maybe we just belong to that camp filled with conspiracies about ‘Big Brother’ and mind control. Whatever it is it does feel a hard task and certainly fear plays a part in what we might discover.
But each of us is ambitious. If not in your career then for your own personal goals. We all want something like genuine happiness and fulfilment in those endeavours. Think about it like this, isn’t it true that for anything which works or has a function we first need a set of instructions: a manual to find out how it works? A manual first explains the characteristics of something before going on to explain how it works. Otherwise while you might guess at how something is put together chances are you will miss everything that thing is capable of doing for you. Knowing ourselves is something like this. We have to find the courage and be committed to learning about who we are so that we can know how best to work at our goals. We could guess and still achieve some victories in our lives but without taking the time to truly know ourselves we can never do this in a way which sees us exploit the most of our potential for our own benefit. Some of us are happy just to know ourselves by the reflections of the way others perceive or respond to us or at worse to be conditioned and manipulated into a version of yourselves others want you to be for their own benefit. I could argue that’s okay too.
But if this makes you unhappy then do the brave thing and lean the ‘manual’ to who you are. Know yourself.
